Planning Your Residence - Figuring Out Your Inside Lighting Choices

By Jerry Watkins

You have so many indoor lighting options to choose from, how do you know which are the first rate options for your family? There are a lot of ways to narrow down your choices. The truth is that the lights you use to illuminate your home says a lot about you and who you (and your family) are.

Gone are the days when you are forced to simply deal with overhead lights and table top lamps. Now there are more options out there than there are people to buy them. How do you figure out which lighting options are best?

At the same time that you begin doing your research, you should start planning out your budget. It is a good idea to plot out how much money you want to spend on your lighting plan. Your overall budget should be sorted out into smaller amounts per room. This will keep you from spending your entire budget on one room while leaving no money for another. Some rooms just need more money than other rooms.

Children's rooms require different kinds of lighting that grown up rooms. This can make them really pleasant to doll up. It is good for a young child to have a lot of illumination - which can include night lights, bedside lamps and even overhead lighting. You can also purchase a light that rotates and shines objects and pattern up on to the walls. At the same time, you want the room to be illuminated enough to work well for art projects, homework and other stuff during the day. If your children are older, you'll have to purchase some desk lighting, reading lights, etc.

Your kitchen lights will need to have a spot on your budget as well. Today we are not limited to the choices of fluorescent or incandescent bulbs when we install lights in our kitchen. More and more, people are choosing track lighting for their kitchen illumination.

Overhead lights and lamps used to be your only options. Your bulb choices were either fluorescent or incandescent. All lighting was pretty standard white lighting. Now there are dozens of options available for people who don't want to get stuck with just one or the other. Of course, choosing between all of those options can be difficult. Before you start shopping, take time to consider all of your options before you build your plan. Your budget will be better for it.
