Important Tips for Choosing the Right Bed Frame

By Brad Ryan

A bed frame makes a bed more comfortable by supporting the mattress and the box spring without a foot-board or headboard. Bed frames can be made of wood or metal. Among metal frames, there are different types of frames made up of iron, steel, brass or a mix of one or more metals.

Iron bed frames are mainly used as a support for iron beds, though they can be used with other beds also. They are available in many styles and price ranges. There are certain companies which produce handmade iron bed frames. They are generally quite expensive.

The general belief that larger frames cost more than the smaller ones is baseless. Keeping in mind the recession hit economy globally, the manufacturers are creating options in all types of materials. Thus, one can find fine bargains for themselves, when it comes to buying a bed's frame of their choice. When selecting the bed frames, keep in mind the size of the bed along with the headboard and the foot board of the bed if present. Choose a frame that compliments these boards.

Modern beds are versatile when it comes to style. All types of bed linens work with them so you can create your own personal design. Bedspreads, comforters, pillow shams and throw pillows all work nicely, in any combination. You can neatly tuck in the corners of your comforter or let it flow freely. Whether you opt for a traditional style or modern fashion, both will look wonderful on your modern bed.

Following are some guidelines to follow for ensuring the proper support for your new mattress set: You need at least one rigid center support bar with one leg to the floor for queen size bedding and at least two rigid center support bars with legs to the floor for king size. Wood center support slats should be at least 3/4 inch plywood. If yours are not at least 3/4 inch plywood, consider a metal bed slat system like a Strong Arm, Bed Beam, or Bed Bridge support system. Twin and full size beds do not usually require additional center supports, but with the extra heavy weight of today's bedding, it sure wouldn't hurt to add a center support bar. Refer to your mattress manufacturer's warranty card for detailed information about what support is required.

Haven't we all seen lots of pictures of honeymoon suites with white lace curtains and canopy beds with ivory silken bedspread strewn with rose petals? Now this theme can even be extended to a home. Young couples need not worry if canopy bed frames seem way beyond their budget. They can even convert a simple platform bed into a canopy bed with four poles attached to the four corners of the bed frame. Attach curtain rods to the frames and you can hang curtains to get a canopy bed effect. Apart from a romantic theme, canopy ones are also lovely for the rooms of young girls. Done in soft pastel shades with delicate designs, canopy frames bring a cool, soft, look to a young girl's room.
