By Melissa Beck

Mattress toppers are a great addition to a bed because they add many benefits including softness, more warmth, body support, a protective barrier for your expensive mattress and extra thickness for comfort, depending on which type you select. A mattress topper is generally not needed if you already have a quality pillowtop mattress, although in some instances, users may find a need to place a topper on these mattresses for specific reasons.

Mattress toppers come in many different types which each one offering its own particular positives. Even though there are many choices on the market, there are several that are the most popular of all. Three of the most popular mattress toppers include the down topper, down alternative topper and the foam mattress topper.

Perhaps the most popular bed topper in the world is the down mattress topper. It has long been equated with luxury and comfort and can be found in four star hotels all over the world. Filled with fine, soft goose down, these toppers are very soft, warm and comfortable for most users.

The down alternative topper is another very popular bedding accessory that many users prefer because of the comfort and ease of maintenance. These accessories are made from synthetic fibers such as polyester that are derived from petrochemical sources. This product is both durable and comfortable.

The memory foam topper is another highly popular bedding accessory because of its ability to contour the body and dampen transference of movement from one side of the bed to the other. Not to be confused with natura latex, memory foam is derived from synthetic sources. It is very durable, but also tends to retain more body heat than an organic latex topper.
