Thoughts On Deciding Interior Lighting

By Carl Jordan

There are so many different indoor lighting options available, how do you know which of those options is best for your home? There are a lot of ways to narrow down your choices. The choices you make about your lighting options say an awful lot about you and the rest of your family as well.

Don't let yourself pick indiscriminately! There are quite a few options out there that are better! How are you supposed to sort through all of the different choices and figure out which ones are best for you? The following are some of the things that you should contemplate when you are putting together the lighting scheme for your home.

You should plan your budget at the same time that you do your initial research. Deciding how much you can afford to drop on your lighting scheme is good. Breaking down your total budget by room is also good. This way you won't accidentally spend all of your money in your bathroom while leaving no money for the other rooms. Some rooms require you to spend more money than others.

A 10x10 room usually only needs a single lamp. More than on source, however, is needed for a larger room especially if you want to make sure that the entire room can be seen. If your only concern is a small area, you can simply use a focal light. You can use overhead lights or good floor lamps if you want to light up an entire large room.

Do not forget about the rest of your house's decorating scheme when you sort through your indoor lighting options. It is easier to sort through all of your lighting choices if you follow the existing decorating scheme that you have chosen for the rest of your house. Houses that are filled with smaller focused pockets like reading corners and office nooks don't do well when they are lit with big diffuse light bulbs. It is better to use small lamps in these areas to help focus your and other people's attentions. Following your decorating scheme can even help you choose lights for difficult rooms like your kitchen. If your home is decorated in soft and muted tones, fluorescent lighting in the kitchen will only be jarring; try track lighting instead.

There are a lot of different indoor lighting options that you can choose from and choosing the right ones can be really difficult. Thankfully, if you're smart and you do some research, you should be able to sort through your options. The more thought you put into your home's lighting scheme, the easier it will be to put together. Before you know it, you'll have a wonderful light plan for each and every room of your home.
