Scenes from Real Life

A walk to my local market is the one weekend ritual I can't live without. Even now, in the doldrums of the winter harvest, I find a quick wonder through the stalls endlessly inspiring -- the rich colors, wabi-sabi shapes and endless varieties of produce kick my creativity into high gear, and then, going home and sketching out an inventive menu for the week is when the real fun starts.

This week I grabbed freshly-baked bread, garlic and sweet potatoes -- essentials for a spicy sweet potato/jalapeno bisque. Then there were farm fresh eggs for my boyfriend's favorite dinner -- steak with caramelized onions and poached eggs. Finally, some curly kale to mix into a wintery pasta dish. I can't wait!

So tell me, what's your favorite weekend ritual?
