Delegating Space for a Small Living Room

By Daniel Akinson

Delegating space in a small living room will require you to go the extra mile when it comes to emphasizing the architectural aspects of your living space.

The following facts should be taken into consideration for your remodeling endeavors:

#1. Dimensions Your goal with a small living room is to open it up so that it looks larger than it actually is. Putting a tiny love seat and two skinny chairs in the room just won't do it. In fact, the room will appear empty and unwelcoming with this selection of furniture. Several upholstered furniture pieces with low arms and backs would be a better, more comfortable idea overall. Add storage space by selecting tables that have drawers or nooks underneath the table top. They won't take up a lot of space and will add some weight to the room, as well as keep clutter to a minimum.

2: Furniture Placement. Seating should be as compact as possible. A U-shaped seating arrangement works well, especially when you are entertaining. The chairs should be placed on either side of the couch and turned towards each other. The couch should be positioned against the wall. It's a simple matter of turning the chairs in the direction of the television when you want to watch it. This creates a multi-functional use for the chairs which can be used for watching t.v. and for general socializing. Also, this arrangement allows for easy traffic flow and maximum usage of space.

3: Fittings It is best not to overdo accessory items but rather use them to add visual interest and busts of color. The room will be filled with a sense of practicality when big floor pillows, art pieces and pots are used to decorate it. If you have a special collection of items, you should store them in a corner cabinet or a wall alcove.

#4. How to use color. You should use bright textiles and paint your walls with gorgeous colors. It's easy to use color to highlight arched entryways and other unique architectural features. The best way to do this is to paint the inner portion of the arch with a different color than that found on the surrounding walls. Colorful window treatments on the windows can be used if you would rather have light colored walls. Or you could paint one wall in a darker color. Use fabrics that have patterns made up of strong colors and then solidify the color scheme by using monochrome fabrics that are in lighter colors.

#5. Adding Light to Your Living Space The purpose of lighting is to highlight the different shades and items of visual interest in the room. Place tall standing lamps on the tables that are on either side of the couch. Floor lamps that are similar in color and design as that of the table lamps should be placed in opposite corners. This allows the room to be filled with light while not being too bright. Make sure the the lamps are all uniform in height so that there is an even amount of lighting throughout the room and for visual continuity.

Flooring for a Small Living Room The entire space can be brought together by adding the right area rug. Pick out a spot in your room where the rug will have enough space to "uphold" the seating arrangement as a whole. This allows for definition of the seating area and will also create a feeling of having additional room existing outside of the seating area.
